Doing Good: MIT Scientists Build UV Robot that Disinfects Local Food Bank in 30 Minutes

One thing everyone is concerned about is their health. The best way to stay healthy and keep each other safe is by disinfecting everything you use. One team of scientists has developed a machine that can disinfect an entire food bank in Boston in only 30 minutes.

MIT Scientists find a way to efficiently sanitize large surface areas using robotic technology

According to MIT News, the team decided to move away from chemical cleaning products that are expensive and dangerous to use over large surface areas. The good news is a team from the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, in collaboration with the Greater Boston Food Bank, has created a completely robotic system that thoroughly disinfects surfaces.

The robotics’ base houses a UV-C light fixture. The lab team found the results to be extremely favorable and believes the same technology could be used to disinfect even larger environments, including factories, restaurants, and supermarkets.

The robotic technology has the ability to map out the area and navigate between points

The system works by the robotics mapping out the area and navigating between points and other specified areas. Moreover, with food banks as an essential service, it’s very important to keep these clean and running. Food banks are also facing a stronger demand.

The robot managed to find his way around the warehouse at .22 miles per hour. At this rate, the robot could cover 4,000 square feet in a little less than 30 minutes. Moreover, the team’s method of UV irradiation is currently used by hospitals.

The GBFB is excited to work with the MIT lab techs. Moreover, the robot is built to follow any directions given by the team. The food bank team named the shipping floor as a key location for the robot to disinfect. With a focus on the shipping floor, it prioritizes disinfecting items leaving the food bank to reduce the potential spread of germs into the community.

It’s good to see people putting the health and safety of their community on top. Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
